Day One – On our first
day of this exciting tour, we travel to Brunswick, Georgia. On the way to Georgia we will stop at midday for a delicious,
country-style buffet meal in Starke (included). We will have two nights of luxurious accommodations at the Embassy Suites,
where every room is a two-room suite, with a sitting room and bedroom. Each suite also features two flat screen, hi-def
42” color tv’s, wet bar with microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker. The suites are also set up with a
hairdryer, iron and ironing board, high-speed internet access. Also included is a nightly, evening reception with your
favorite beverages. Each morning of our stay, we’ll enjoy a full American breakfast buffet with made-to-order
eggs and omelets. The hotel also provides a complimentary shuttle within a 3 mile radius, you may wish to use this to
get to nearby restaurants for your evening meal. Our hotel is located adjacent to the Glynn Place Mall and the guest
rooms overlook and enclosed, spacious atrium with cascading waterfalls, illuminated trees and a carousel theme. We should
arrive fairly early today, which will allow some free time to explore the mall and have dinner on your own at your leisure.
There is a lot to see in Brunswick. Our
short driving tour will feature Historic Downtown Brunswick, which is pursuing downtown revitalization through economic redevelopment
in the context of historic preservation. Brunswick is the center of Georgia’s shrimp and crab industry, earning
the city it’s nickname “The Shrimp Capital of the World”. We will take a peek at the bustling shrimp
docks. Another must-see is Lanier Oak, where in the 1870’s Georgia poet Sidney Lanier once stood, and viewing
the landscape was inspired to write “The Marshes of Glynn”, considered to be his finest poetry. Day Two – This will be an action-packed day of touring. We will have a local, professional guide during
our driving tours today. We will tour Jekyll Island, famous for “Millionaires Village”, featuring 33 well-preserved
winter homes of Victorian-era millionaires, how interesting it will be to see these homes of the wealthy from long ago.
Another treasure of the island is a two-story structure built from tabby in 1742 stands in ruins along N. Riverview Rd. The
house was occupied by Major William Horton during the British colonial period, who also brewed beer in Georgia's first brewery
(the ruins of which are a few hundred yards down the road). This structure has been meticulously preserved over the past 100
years as an example of coastal Georgia building techniques and as one of the oldest surviving buildings in the state.
Next, we’ll make the short drive to St. Simons Island for more historic touring. There is much to see here including:
Avenue of the Oaks and Christ Church where docents may be available for tours. In 1736 John and Charles Wesley, chaplains
to Gen. James Oglethorpe’s settlers at Ft. Frederica, held services under the oak trees at the location of the present
church. Christ Church was erected in 1883 by Anson Phelps Dodge, Jr. as a memorial to his first wife. The famous
author Eugenia Price, best known for her historical novels set in the American South, is buried in the church cemetery.
We will stop for some free time at St. Simons Town Center with many shops and it’s original, working 1872 lighthouse.
This area is also home to a fishing pier and a number of popular restaurants. Another site to see is Epworth by the
Sea which is now a Methodist Conference Center built on the site of the Hamilton Plantation. At the end of a busy day of touring, it will be great to return to your luxury suite at the Embassy
Suites, once again. This evening you may again enjoy the hotel’s cocktail party. For dinner on your own,
at your leisure, you may wish to visit one of the fine restaurants located within the adjacent Glynn Place Mall, such as Ruby
Tuesday’s or the nearby Joe’s Japanese Steakhouse or one of many choices at the mall food court.
Day Three – After our included, hot full breakfast, we will begin our journey home with our great memories of
our Brunswick and Golden Isles visit. Thank you for traveling with Travel Is Fun Tours!
